The magnificent Grade II listed building, Sealyham Mansion on the south west coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales is getting a thorough makeover. Here’s the story so far…

Sealyham served as a sanatorium and medical facility between 1923 and 1964. In 1970 the building was purchased and refurbished as rental apartments before being sold again in 1980 to an investment firm that began the activity centre venture.

Private investors then purchased the Georgian mansion house and ran it as a specialist activity centre for children, where they could learn about and become immersed in the outdoors and all this part of Wales has to offer.

Sadly, as a fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic, Sealyham closed its doors in May 2021, despite the owners trying their utmost to keep it going.

Enter Active Learning Centres

In November of the same year the striking building was eventually acquired by Active Learning Centres, who pledged to turn it into a modern and class-leading facility for young people across the UK.

“This is a wonderful venture for us all and we are already underway with our plans. Our aim is that Sealyham will offer transformational outdoor learning experiences and adventures for young people, which truly engage with its unique coastal position, placing the stunning Pembrokeshire environment at their heart. It is supported by class-leading facilities and outstanding customer service, together with a management and instructor team that really understands the importance of building Essential Skills, Character and Wellbeing. We really look forward to welcoming both regular and new visitors next year”. Pat Milston FRGS, MD, Active Learning Centre

Sealyham joins the likes of Cuffley Camp and The Towers, to become the latest outdoor education centre refurbishment project for Refurb as Principal Contractors.

The refurb begins…

Owing to our established reputation with Active Learning Centres as Principal Contractors that can handle curveballs and still deliver, we began work on this prestigious refurbishment project in February 2023. Nine months in and we’ve made remarkable progress, thanks to the skilled trades and suppliers we’ve engaged in this part of Wales.

‘Once again I’m honoured by Active Learning to be part of the restoration and refurbishment of an epic building like Sealyham. It has a unique history within it’s walls that we are pleased to preserve and make available to many children and teachers to come. I’m sure they will remember this place for a lifetime.’ Matthew Boyd, Director, Refurb
